Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve Explores Propolis Potential Through RES‑MAB Project

The team of the Alto Bernesga Biosphere Reserve, accompanied by professional and aspiring beekeepers, visited the Institute of Food Science and Technology (ICTAL) at the University of León as part of the RES‑MAB project.

Guided by principal researcher Eugenia Rendueles, the group toured ICTAL’s laboratories and pilot plant to learn about the potential of propolis as a natural food preservative. Researchers demonstrated how propolis can serve as a sustainable alternative to nitrates and nitrites in the meat industry, offering new opportunities for innovation and added value in local beekeeping products.

This initiative reflects the Reserve’s commitment to promoting sustainable, science-based solutions that connect natural resources, innovation, and territorial development.
