🌍✨ Key insights from the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou (China) – UNESCO #WCBR2025

Roser Maneja, Scientific Director of both the #CTFC & the International Centre for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves, participated in the side-event where the first-ever global assessment of UNESCO-designated sites — Biosphere Reserves, World Heritage Sites, and Global Geoparks — was presented. Covering 2,000 sites worldwide, this assessment highlights biodiversity and climate trends, threats, and opportunities, and explores how these unique territories contribute to conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

🔍 The panel “Unlocking the Potential of UNESCO Sites” examined how nature data, reporting frameworks, and financing tools drive action for people, nature, and culture.

Roser Maneja contributed to the discussion on how global reporting frameworks such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can:
✅ Strengthen recognition of Biosphere Reserves in global commitments.
✅ Align nature finance with local community needs.
✅ Showcase the role of these sites as “living laboratories” where biodiversity protection, sustainable use, and human well-being converge.

📊 By adopting global monitoring frameworks, Biosphere Reserves can make their contributions more visible and comparable than ever before—guiding investment, scaling impact, and reinforcing their role in tackling today’s climate and biodiversity crises.
